In 1991, he co-founded the Dutch Working group on Ultrasonography. He is a founder member of the Musculoskeletal Ultrasonography Study Group of the American College of Rheumatology (1999). Together with Dr WA Schmidt, he was responsible for the basic and advanced workshops in ultrasonography which are held during the annual meetings of the ACR (1999-2009). In addition, Dr Bruyn is a member of the faculty of the EULAR courses for Musculoskeletal Ultrasound as well as a faculty member of the EULAR “Teach the teacher” courses.

As of 2014, he is co-chair of the OMERACT task force on Ultrasonography.

In 2014, he is associate editor of “Archives of Rheumatology”.

Dr Bruyn is the (co)author of over 100 peer-reviewed papers in the field of rheumatology, particularly on osteoporosis, inflammatory rheumatic disorders and musculoskeletal ultrasonography.

Dr Bruyn is also author of the well-known guide for musculoskeletal ultrasound, i.e., “Introductory Guide to Musculoskeletal Ultrasound for the Rheumatologist”
